Information

There are two main types of portable cold mist humidifiers-ultrasonic and evaporative. Although they are both effective in humidifying, they have significant differences in how they generate mist. If you want to make the purchased machine more suitable for your actual usage, you may need to make some trade-offs.

There are basically three main differences between ultrasonic and evaporative humidifiers: price, noise, and the way each handles mineral fouling (white/gray dust). But first, you need to understand the difference between the two types:

Ultrasonic humidifier

Ultrasonic humidifier is a kind of ultra-fine water mist that uses high-frequency sound vibration, and then drains water to add to the room. It is generally considered that these two types of humidifiers are relatively quiet. Ultrasound usually has no filter in the design. This really saves operating costs.

When operating an ultrasonic humidifier, more dust will be generated around the room instead of evaporation, because there is usually no filter to absorb mineral fouling.

Another way to reduce dust is to use softened water in the reservoir, although this may increase your costs.

Some people prefer this type of humidifier because it is considered safer because there is no hot water in the unit, so there is no danger of scalding because the unit does not heat water in any way.

Like any humidifier that does not boil water to produce mist, there is a risk that bacteria will exist and be discharged into the room. Sterilizing humidifiers becomes more important than boiling water with warm water humidifiers.

Evaporative humidifier

These humidifiers have been in use for decades and are considered the most common or garden-style humidifiers. The most basic (traditional) way to humidify a room is to place a pot of water or a can of water in the room to let the moisture evaporate into the air naturally to reduce dryness.

The working principle of the evaporative humidifier is basically the same, but it is more efficient when venting moisture out of the room. The evaporative humidifier can be changed according to the design. There are several non-filter units that simply transfer water mist or steam out, but most filters require routine cleaning or replacement. Therefore, in general, there is a continuous operating cost for replacing filters for evaporative humidifiers.

The water is sucked into the fan with the help of a filter and discharged from the equipment as a mist or spray. Although the term "filter element" sounds small, the filter element of the filter can be quite large, occupying most of the space in the humidifier housing.

Some models can combine some humidification functions and filter designs.

This is a popular filter design, due to the function of the filter, the size of the trap minerals, and reduce the risk of fine dust filtering into the room. Some models are also designed for aromatherapy during humidification. Although you would expect the type of humidifier to be clearly identifiable on the packaging, it is not easy. One key to remember is that if a cool mist humidifier has a filter, you need to clean or replace it, but you don't have to worry about scale.

1. Price considerations

With two completely different humidification systems, there must be some obvious differences in operation.

The price of evaporative humidifiers is relatively cheap, but most of them have filters, usually filter membranes, which must be cleaned or replaced regularly. Therefore, the lower cost of the up-front and subsequent more maintenance costs, not to mention the need to find the correct replacement filter. The cost of replacing filters often depends on the scale and brand, but most of them are low and reasonable costs.

On the other hand, ultrasonic humidifiers usually don't use filters and usually cost more than evaporation models. I usually say that because some models have an ultrasonic style mist, but there are also some types of filter packs. Ultrasonic humidifiers should still be properly maintained to avoid mold and bacteria, as with any water-based appliance.

2. Running noise

The most common place for a portable humidifier is in the bedroom; the bedroom is the main living space, so it's no wonder that most consumers want a humidifier that runs quietly. If the noise of the humidifier is your main concern, an ultrasonic humidifier is your best choice.

Although there are some low-noise products, most ultrasonic humidifiers are quieter than others. That's because they don't have fans, as evaporative humidifiers usually do. This can reduce the noise level.

If noise is not a problem, but the budget is, choose a more affordable evaporative humidifier. You should understand that even those humidifiers that boast of quiet operation are noisier when the water volume is low; it is impossible to completely eliminate the operating noise of the humidifier.

3. Humidifier white dust

Compared to evaporative humidifiers, ultrasonic humidifiers tend to release more white/gray dust, especially if they do not have an on-board filter bag. The white/gray dust is actually a mineral deposit of water, the harder your water, the more serious it is. Hard water is caused by the presence of minerals in the water source, depending on the specific source of your drinking water.

The reason why an ultrasonic humidifier produces more dust is that it usually does not have a filter to capture or contain these mineral deposits and return to the room with the moisture.

Measures to control the white dust of the humidifier include: use distilled water or reverse osmosis water; if your humidifier model has a humidifier decalcification filter; or reduce the humidity of the humidifier to reduce the amount of dust that needs to be cleaned.

It is impossible to eliminate this white dust. This is a small disadvantage when you choose an ultrasonic humidifier. The greater the moisture output, the more dust will be cleaned. Also keep in mind that there are some compact, especially small (desk-style) evaporative humidifiers, which do not have a filter in their design. Since the yield is less water, mineral dust is hardly noticeable.
